Margaret Clark's first novel, I Left My Heart In Harlem, tells a gripping tale which takes us on a journey of a family striving amidst poverty in the projects of Harlem. Clark's work, which more importantly, takes us on a journey of the soul, is based on her on life-experiences. Clark grew up in a small apartment in Maryland shared by 21 people. She went to work at the age of eleven to help support her family. Like Liz, the main character in this book, Mrs. Clark managed to escape the poverty of her childhood, receive an education, become a successful businesswoman, and help her family break the cycle of poverty.
